When ships were made of wood, there were two main risks: algae could proliferate to the point of reducing maneuverability and speed; and boring molluscs (for example <em>Teredo navalis<\/em>), if left unchecked, could even cause ships to sink. To protect hulls, pitch, bitumen, tar, or water-repellent resins were used. But the problem was not fully solved even with the transition to metal ships: a possible extreme case is the naval Battle of Tsushima (1905), when the Russian Baltic Fleet undertook an exhausting journey across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans to face the Japanese fleet in the Korea Strait. The reasons for the Russian defeat were multiple, and among them was the growth of algae on hulls in tropical waters, with no opportunity to clean the ships in friendly ports, which contributed to reducing their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">News from the Venice Boat Show<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Removing these kinds of bulky \u201cparasites\u201d from hulls is not easy. Now there is news. It is not yet a commercial product, it cannot be purchased, but it is already a working prototype. Yesterday, at the Venice Boat Show in the historic Arsenale, the first floating station for cleaning a hull without lifting the vessel out of the water or draining the basin it is in was presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new system is called Anahid and is produced by the company Geico, based in Cinisello Balsamo (Milan). It is an advanced platform that uses artificial intelligence and robotics to operate directly in the water, without the need for dry docking (i.e., without having to haul the ship out of the water). The Anahid technology also benefits from collaboration with another Italian company, Greensailor, which specialises in eco-friendly antifouling coatings. For now, it is designed to clean hulls up to forty meters long; the idea is to carry out experiments and adapt the system to vessels of any size.
